Abstract: Recently, the boom of “the sunrise industry” Chinese tourism has brought forth a rise in Chinese-English translation in this regard. However, as to the question of what concrete principles should be observed and what particular methods may be employed in the process of translating Chinese four-character expressions, there seems to be no ready solutions. This paper, setting a background of the linguistic and functional features of the touristic text, analyzes various examples of three types of Chinese four-character expressions, and eventually proposes an applicable approach—omission—to guide the C-E translation practice.

摘要:随着中国旅游业这一“朝阳产业”的蓬勃发展,汉语旅游资料英译的重要性正日益凸显。然而,针对汉语四字格英译过程中应该遵守哪些具体原则,以及实践操作中有什么切实可行的方法,这些问题似乎并没有完全解决。本文以旅游文本的语言学、功能论特点为背景,通过对比分析旅游文本中三种汉语四字格的特征,并结合丰富的翻译实例,总结归纳出有利于汉语旅游文本英译实践的可行方法:缩减法。
