Abstract: Idioms are a particular part of a language; they usually have fixed meaning and are closely related to distinctive cultural features and cultural attitudes. It is believed that idioms are the most culturally loaded element in the vocabulary of any language. With relation to forms, they give an expression of the special features of the language. There exists vast differences between English and Chinese cultures. Therefore, translators are expected to learn the culture of both the source language and the target language well and choose proper translation methods according to specific situations in order to maintain the cultural characteristics of the source text, and achieve functional equivalence between the source text and the target text.
