Abstract: J.M.Coetzee, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003, is famous for his special writing style: obscure, imaginative, poetic and being full of twisty thinking. And In the Heart of the Country is a typical novel which resists interpretation. Different critics have explored the novel in the light of post-colonialism or feminism. In order to get a new understanding of the novel, I will present a new reading of In the Heart of the Country with recourse to eco-criticism in the hope of seeing through the puzzling world of language and reaching the core of the human life--the nature.
