Abstract: Scarlett is the heroine of Margaret Mitchell’s masterpiece Gone with the Wind. This novel sets the Civil War as background. Because of the war Scarlett’s life changes dramatically. She changes from a happy girl of a big plantation owner to a new woman who shoulders the heavy burden of life all by herself. This thesis takes the American Civil War as a clue and analyzes the transformation of Scarlett’s character during three periods: prewar time, wartime and postwar time. The thesis further explains the reasons why she could survive the war and still remain powerful after the war. She is the representative of the new Southern women.
