Abstract: A Rose for Emily is one of William Faulkner’s “Yoknapatawpha series”. In this short novel, he employs various writing features, especially symbolism, to successfully create Emily, an eccentric but valiant woman. Through symbolism, the subjects and characters are not merely themselves but embody more profoundly symbolic meanings. The use of symbolism helps the readers comprehend this novel’s theme much easier, and eventually find the invisible rose mentioned in the title. By analyzing this novel and the symbolic elements, we can find the social significance that Faulkner wants to convey.
