Abstract: In the 21st century, educational reform in China has changed profoundly the situation of English teaching. The first round of educational reform has gained great achievement in the discussion and researches on the teaching method and is gradually shifting to the second round of reform, with one of the highlights on the teacher development. Meanwhile, in order to enhance students' English level, more and more schools bring foreign teachers to teach English, providing students more authentic context in which English is used. With the number of foreign English teachers increasing, their quality and mode of teaching has been under the spotlight.
This paper focuses on the self-development of foreign teachers with study on two cases, trying to find out the possible rules underlining the personal development as a foreign teacher in China and discover the external factors and internal factors influencing the foreign teacher development, as well as their their needs and expectations.
The study may give suggestions to the management of foreign teacher and raise their consciousness of self-development, thus optimize the quality of foreign language teaching and strengthens the power of foreign language teaching in China.
