Abstract:Quantifiers are widely used in the linguist activities in the English and the Chinese languages. Quantifiers is a kind of word which can express unit of quantity for people, things and animals. More specificly speaking, quantifiers are often used before the noun or after the numeral. The use of quantifiers makes the sentence more completely, actively and vividly. It is estimated that English is a kind of language lacking of quantifiers, for the numerals can be used modified, so there are big differences between Chinese quantifiers and English quantifiers and the special research on the Chinese quantifiers and English quantifiers should be given to.
Based on the basic theories of grammar, linguistics and translation studies, this thesis studies the relation between Chinese and English quantifiers, analyzes the formation, omission, phrase structure and the syntactic characteristics of the Chinese and English quantifiers, tries to find out the similarities and differences existing in the above two languages, provides with the solutions to the English translation of Chinese quantifiers, and also hopes that this kind of research may be of some help to the actual translation practice.
