Abstract
Hemingway believes that characters in the book should be created according to the real experience of the writer. Characterization needs writers to make use of their knowledge and think with hearts. With this belief, Hemingway successfully creates many impressive characters which are known as tough guys. All of these tough guys are brave, tireless and persistent. In the face of difficulties, all of them will never give up. It is not difficult for readers to find that the tough guys in Hemingway’s stories have many things in common. They are similar not only in experiences but also in characteristics. Thus this thesis will analyze these tough guys in detail and find their similarities. Then it will explore the factors that result in their similarities. It aims to help readers further understand Hemingway and his tough guys.
