Abstract
This thesis is a study on Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea from the perspective of eco-criticism. The paper discloses the author’s ecological consciousness by discussing Santiago’s attitude towards nature and the relationship between the old man and the sea. Santiago lived a simple and plain life. He respected living things in nature and cared about all things in the world. However, he has a paradoxical attitude towards nature. Through probing into the eco-critical view in the novel, this paper is to reveal the realistic significance of the novella. In the development of society, human beings should have great reverence for the natural world instead of destroying nature.
Key words: Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea, eco-criticism
