Abstract

As a writer who experienced several wars in his lifetime, Hemingway explored the theme of war in his many works such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and so on. A Farewell to Arms was his first best-seller and its publication cemented Hemingway's status in the history of American literature. It is a love story between Henry and Catherine against the backdrop of World War I   countries involved were awash with wounded soldiers, flames of war and displaced civilians. Through the characterization of Henry who suffered so much in the war in A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway exposed the nature of war   the destroyer of happiness.
