Abstract
Metaphor, an important way of thinking, can help people identify and grasp the world. The essence of metaphor is to understand and experience a certain kind of thing through another thing. In many literary works, metaphor is not only used to deepen the theme of the article, but also to enhance the emotional expression of the article. Many scholars and students have analyzed from different perspectives on the Tess of the D’Urbervilles, but most of them focus on the causes of Tess’s tragedy. Few people have studied this novel from the perspective of metaphor. This thesis studies the metaphors in the Tess of the D’Urbervilles by using the conceptual metaphor theory, especially, through the analysis of color metaphors and animal metaphors in this novel. This thesis explores that the application of metaphors plays a positive role in deepening the theme of the novel and enhancing the reader's understanding and appreciation of the novel.
