Abstract:
Ernest Miller Hemingway, among the most famous writer in the 20th century, serving as one of the representatives of Lost Generation. He is not only a heroic figure as a writer ,but also ever fought in war with different comrades from around the world as a “tough man” ,rubbing shoulders with various soldiers, civilians, and even those from opposite sides, which influence his description of the characters in his war novels. And this paper is going to serve as a way to analyze the characters in one of his best renowned novels-For Whom the Bell Tolls ,from the perspectives of personality including their behavior, their thoughts and their view of points. By doing what I have mentioned, I want to find out the conflicts and emotional up and down within people’ hearts according to which I can show readers a vivid picture of wartime.
In the paper, I mainly discuss and analyze the characters from their experience to their thoughts. Not only do I need to conclude what kind of persons they are, but also I need to find what pattern or reality their behavior and attitude express, the hatred to wars, the fancy for wars, the self-destruction or the last kindness floating above the wreckages? Did they really exist back then? This is what I am going to discuss.
In chapter one I am going to analysis Robert Jordan according to his experience, his personality and his views on war. In chapter two I am going to talk about Anselmo, one of Jordan’s comrade from his personality and views to war. In chapter three I am going to analysize Maria to show some last dignity and kindness left in the war. And in chapter four I am going to say something about Pablo, once a hero by comparing his past with his recent condition.
I want to theoretically prove that in wars humanity, goodness and kindness of the man do not completely disappear in terms of the analysis of the characters.
