Abstract
English Curriculum Standard Emphasizes mainly on "integrated linguistic competence" of language teaching goal. What’s more, the defines of writing ability for middle school students are as following: Students should be able to collect the material; draft the essay and message independently, then modify it under the teacher’s guidance; They should be able to make the essay more influence and coherence by using conjunctions. They should be ale to describe the figure and event simply as well as to make the explanation according to the given statistics.
In order to understand the current situation of English writing teaching in middle school, the teachers' teaching ideas, the display of their ideas in the writing teaching methods, and to improve the teaching skills of English writing, the author do the research which main subjects are based on the English teachers and students from No.46 of Chengdu Middle School who do the questionnaires and interviews. Besides, the author do the observation in some classes and the case analysis of the teacher.
Research results show that there is a gap between the teachers' teaching skills and the basic requirements for writing in English Curriculum Standards (2011). Teachers focus on the language points and grammar only while neglecting the training of writing skills. The students have not yet realized the essence and significance of writing skills; they are less interested in English writing; they are in need of training for writing habits; They are not confident enough in writing.
Results also show that the main causes for these problems are: (1) The teacher lack awareness of writing teaching, do not take enough time for writing teaching courses. (2) The teachers are not strict enough while marking and commenting the students' writings. They focus too much on the spellings and grammar mistakes, with little attention to language use. Their comments are often too simple, which offer little guidance; (3) The teachers mark almost all the writings, while the students themselves and their peers do little to improve their own writings.
