Abstract: It is womanism that Alice Walker uses to express her care and support to the black women. In her works, the feelings of love and hate in black women’s hearts and the black women’s fighting for their liberation and identity are depicted. In 1982, The Color Purple was published, which mainly told the world the hardship black women suffered when they were growing up and fighting for the civil rights against all kinds of barriers. In this text, it starts at Walker’s life experiences and her characters. Combining with her womanism, the analyses of many characters in The Color Purple are represented to embody its theme. Therefore, the first part is about the thoughts of womanism; the second one combining with womanism analyzes the changes and growth of characters in the novel with womanists’ help.
