ABSTRACT
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. TED speech as a case, German functionalist school of translation theory as the theoretical framework, this study interprets the TED speech subtitling from text features, translation function, behavior and purpose of translation, translation strategy. The study analyzes the feasibility of teleology to guide the subtitle translation, finally comes to the conclusion that Skopostheorie is very useful and important to the research of subtitle translation.
