ABSTRACT
Network catchwords have become a special type of oral language with the fast development of the Internet. At the same time, their influences are already beyond the range of the Internet. In order to make the films attractive and popular, many network catchwords have been used in film subtitles. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the use of network catchwords in film subtitle translation. After a review of previous studies, the thesis employs a questionnaire on the Internet about people’s attitudes toward this issue. Results show that they have different opinions on the occurrence of network catchwords in film subtitle translation; however, the majority believe it is acceptable if proper network catchwords are used properly in the subtitles of foreign films. The significance of this paper is to help people appreciate foreign films better by adopting a proper attitude to the network catchwords in film subtitles and reduce the conflicts caused by cultural differences.
