摘要：20世纪美国作家厄普代克以霍桑《红字》里的女主人公海斯特为原型，继承又反叛的写出了又一经典著作——《S.》。厄普代克将人物和背景现代化，对海斯特的形象进行颠覆与重写。从而表现自己独特的视角和对当代女性解放潮流的态度。本文即从两位女性形象出发，挖掘她们所面临的共同困境，分析两位女性所采取的捍卫尊严的不同方式，以及在不同时代背景、不同作家笔下所表现出来的差异性及其原因,探讨两位作家不同的价值导向和文化追求。

Abstract:In twentieth Century the American writer Updike Hawthorne "the scarlet letter" the heroine Hester as prototype, inheritance and rebellious wrote another classic -- "S.". Updike will be the characters and background of modernization.the subversion and rewriting of the image of Hester prynne. In order to show the unique angle of view and the contemporary female emancipation trend attitude.This article embarks from the two female characters, mining common difficulties they faced by the analysis of different methods, two women have taken to defend their dignity and differences in backgroundin different times by different writers represented and its reasons, discusses the two writers of different value orientation and cultural pursuit.
