Wuthering Heights is one of the greatest masterpieces of the British literature history in mid nineteenth century. Its dramatic love and ultimate love tragedy are closely connected to the hero and heroine’s personal qualities. However, studies and debates of Wuthering Heights are various and there is a wide spectrum of opinions about it. So in my thesis, I choose Catherine, the heroine, as my breakthrough point, which is rarely focused on. In order to reveal the huge influence of Catherine’s complex personality factors on the plot development, I will have a detailed analysis of several famous plot of Wuthering Heights. What’s more, the dual personality of Catherine has set a sad tone for the love as well as its development. In my view, if we start from this point, we can open up a new dimension about Wuthering Heights, which is not only a social tragedy, but also a tragedy of female at that time.
Wuthering Heights is the best works of Emily Bronte, who is one of the Bronte Sister. This novel describes the Gypsy foundling Heathcliff was fed up by the old masters of wuthering heights.Because humiliation and his unpleasant love, he decided to go out to get rich. After being rich, he came back and was revenge on his girlfriend Catherine as well as her husband. The film is full of intense struggling against oppression and spirit to fight, but the fiction is always shrouded in tense romantic atmosphere. And in my thesis, I will study two important relationship, which interrelates with each other. That is the relationship between Catherine’s personality and her love for Heathcliff as well as another relationship between Catherine’s personality and her final tragedy.
After finishing reading this great works, it is not hard for us to find the fact that in the Catherine’s childhood, she was purity, sincere and did whatever she wanted. She did not take secular doctrines seriously and consider too much about others’ bias towards her. She was brave to follow her true desire, showing her crazy and intense love for Heathcliff. During this period, the ID drove her to persist in her decision. However, as is mentioned above, born in Victoria Times made it impossible for Catherine to live without the influence of the value of secular doctrines, such as The principle of hierarchy and the ideal of class. As a result, as she grown up, she gradually learnt and accepted many theory of the civilized society. In order to be respected by others and meet her own vanity, she became no longer innocent any more and even try to bury her love for Heathcliff. It was this wrong choice result in her tragedy. |
