Abstract: Eugene O’Neill, the Nobel Prize laureate for literature in 1936, has through out his dramatic career experimented with various dramatic techniques and philosophical ideals. Beyond the Horizon explores a love tragedy where the brothers Andrew Mayo and Robert Mayo love the same woman——Ruth Atkins. This paper is to set about illustrating the protagonists' love tragedies respectively. Ruth Atkins is lost in the choice of love and finally submitted to the money worship. Robert Mayo indulges himself in a love fantasy and consequently gets disillusioned by the breaking of love. As for Andrew Mayo, he is unwilling to face his true love and gradually becomes defective in the ability to love after a long loveless time. Beginning with these decisions that result in the characters' unhappiness and suffering, Beyond the Horizon brings about O’Neill’s views on the love tragedy to the fore. O’Neill holds that love is basically a fight between human and a power that is beyond his control, namely fate. and reveals that the love tragedy is not fortuitous, but inevasible.

摘要：奥尼尔于1936年获得诺贝尔文学奖，他的戏剧生涯中贯穿了各种戏剧技巧和哲学理想。《天边外》讲述了兄弟俩罗伯特·梅奥和安德鲁·梅奥同时爱上一个女人露丝·阿特金斯的爱情悲剧。本文将分别解析主人公们的爱情悲剧。露丝·阿特金斯刚开始迷失在爱情的选择中，之后臣服于对金钱的渴求。罗伯特·梅奥沉溺于对爱情的幻想，在爱情破灭时随之感到绝望。至于安德鲁·梅奥，他不愿意面对自己真正的爱情，长时间缺乏爱的生活使他逐渐丧失了爱的能力。《天边外》反映了奥尼尔的爱情悲剧观。奥尼尔认为爱情本质上是人们与一种他们不能掌控的力量—命运之间的斗争。他认为爱情悲剧不是偶然的，而是必然的。
