Abstract：Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American Romanticism novelist in the late of 19th century. His works are full of religious ideas and The Scarlet Letter is his masterpiece. The Puritanism has a strong impact on him. This paper aims to decode the harmonious ideas in The Scarlet Letter from the view of Puritan Idealism, and discuss the potential meaning of the harmony by interpreting the images of Hester Prynne and Pearl so as to get a balance between human beings and nature. This paper also has the aims of recalling the humanity, criticizing the depression of the harshness of the Puritanism. It is thoughtful to building a harmonious society. The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is to introduce the author Nathaniel Hawthorne and the summary of The Scarlet Letter. The second chapter, literature review, gets the writing basis and theory support of the paper by analyzing the researches in domestic and foreign and the Puritan Idealism. The third chapter discusses the aspect of the harmony between man and nature in the novel. The fourth chapter is to discuss the sublimation of human’s mind. The fifth chapter gives a summary about the deep meaning of the harmony in the novel and presents readers to think the practical significance of building harmonious society over.

中文摘要：纳撒尼尔.霍桑 是美国19世纪浪漫主义后期伟大的小说家。他的作品充满了宗教色彩，《红字》是其代表作。清教主义对霍桑本人有很深的影响，本文将从清教理想主义的角度,通过分析海斯特.白兰和珠儿的形象来解读《红字》中所包涵的和谐思想，寻求一种人与自然，人与人之间的平衡;呼唤人性，批判残酷的清教主义对人性的压抑，同时对构建当今和谐社会有所思考。全文共分五章，第一章主要介绍作者和小说梗概；第二章为文献综述，通过分析国内外研究成果和清教理想主义，得出论文写作依据和理论支撑；第三章论述人与自然的和谐；第四章分析人类心灵的提升；第五章为总结，概括小说中所包涵的和谐思想的深层含义，及其对构建和谐社会的重要现实意义。
