Abstract:Ernest Hemingway is one of the best-known American authors in the 20th century. He is famous for his romantic experiences and unique artistic style all over the world. In his writing, Hemingway cuts out all unnecessary words and complex sentence structures concentrating only on concrete objects and actions, leaving just one-eighth of his letters visible above water, which becomes characteristic of the Hemingway style, as well as, the most influential style of the twentieth century; the Iceberg style. The Iceberg style, also called the Iceberg Principle, characterized by concise style, vivid images, abundant emotion and profound thoughts, is adequately embodied in his most often reprinted short story “A Clean, Well-lighted Place”.
This essay analyzes how the Iceberg Principle is reflected in Hemingway’s “A Clean, Well-lighted Place”, Presented in four parts: a brief introduction to the whole essay; major contents of the Iceberg Principle; a textual analysis of the short story in terms of style, images, emotions and thoughts, and a summary in the final part.

中文摘要:欧内斯特·海明威是20世纪最负盛名的美国小说家之一。他以其浪漫的传奇经历和独特的艺术风格而享誉世界。在其作品中,海明威摒弃了一切不必要的文字和复杂的句式结构,只注重实在的对象和动作,仅八分之一的文字浮于水面,这就是海明威式风格特色,也即二十世纪最有影响的文学风格之一的“冰山风格”,其特点为简洁的文风,鲜明的形象,丰富的感情和深刻的思想,这一切都在海明威的短篇小说《一个干净明亮的地方》中得到生动的体现。
本文旨在分析“冰山原理”是如何体现在海明威的《一个干净明亮的地方》这一短篇小说中。全文包括四个部分:第一部分是对整篇论文的简要介绍;第二部分阐述了“冰山原理”的主要内容;第三部分是从“冰山原理”的四个特点,即从文风,形象,感情和思想的角度所进行的文体分析,最后一个部分是一个全文的总结。
