Abstract
Sight words size is an important part of learning English as a foreign language, especially in early grades. That is, rapid word recognition plays an important and facilitating role in foreign language development, but by and large, most elementary school students in China do not seem to develop good word recognition skills. These students usually start learning English with enthusiasm, which, when times goes by, subsides relatively quickly, mostly because of the intimidating vocabulary size for these beginning learners. Therefore, this thesis is aimed to find the current situation and influence factors of elementary school students’ English word recognition ability. The research tools used include a questionnaire and a word recognition test. After data collection, analysis is conducted and several suggestion are provided to improve elementary school students’ word recognition ability and cultivate their positive attitudes toward English.
