Abstract
The philosophy of death, as an important branch of philosophy, has advanced for centuries and had a profound influence on generations of people from the ancient Greek and Roman until now, including Emily Dickinson who is a famous poet in America. Emily Dickinson has good reputation for her poems on the philosophy of death. This dissertation deals with the description of the philosophy of death in her poems from two aspects. Her different views about it have been analyzed related to life, death, God and eternity. According to my analysis, her contradictory attitudes towards God are decided by the stance of it typical of religious worship to some extent, which is also the epitome of her contradictory views about it. This dissertation also discusses the relationship between her contradictory attitudes towards God and those towards the philosophy of death in full detail, laying the solid foundation for the thorough interpretation of her contradictory attitudes towards the philosophy of death with the purpose of helping people understand the reality of life.
