Abstract:Cognitive linguistics studies language on the basis of the new philosophy and cognitive view, experience of the world and conceptualization of the world that people observe. Language learning is an active mental process. However, in English vocabulary learning and teaching, learners often meet various problems. At the same time, teachers spend a lot of time on vocabulary teaching, but get half the results with twice the effort.
Applying the theories of cognitive linguistics helps vocabulary learning and memorizing, thus, it can be able to improve quality and efficiency of vocabulary teaching and learning.
The paper will take “hand” for example, and analyze the following four theories of cognitive linguistics: metaphor, metonymy, prototype theory and iconicity.
