Abstract: Stephen Crane (1871-1900) is a representative naturalism writer in America in 19th century. One of his representative works is The Open Boat. This thesis probes into The Open Boat in three chapters. Chapter1 mainly discusses the coldness in the work. To present it, we will conclude into it that Nature’s nonchalant attitude toward human. Chapter2 mainly talks about human’s inadequacy in universe. Though the main theme in this work is naturalism, warmth still can be seen. In chapter3 we will discuss warmth by analyzing characters and subtle brotherhood.
