Abstract:Hong Lou Meng is regarded as all encyclopedia of both Chinese language and culture.It is so prevalent since it came into being. A few hundred of figures depicted in the book reveal sumless but intricate interpersonal relationships with the employment of various address terms.To some degree,the kinship terms in the book have become crucial linguistic signs to reflect the complexity of human relationships and cultural features of that particular time.So translators and translation researchers should pay enough attention to the effective transmission of Chinese cultural values.
Among all the complete English versions, A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang and The Story of the Stone translated by David Hawkes and his son-in-law John Minford are the most popular, though the translation strategies and styles are quite different. In this thesis, the author summarizes the similarities and differences of the translation of address terms in the two versions, compares their translation style and tries to find the relation between language and culture. This will be meaningful to understand culture by means of language and at the same time promote the transmission of Chinese culture.
This thesis includes four parts totally. Chapter one is a general introduction to the research.It states the objective of this research, the significance of the research and the outline of the thesis.Chapter Two is an introduction of some translation theories.In this part, some of the important definitions and theories on translation are introduced. Chapter Three is the body of this thesis. In this part, some examples are used and the two different versions of the same address terms are compared. Chapter Four gives a conclusion of the research.

摘要:《红楼梦》被誉为中国语言和文化的百科全书,自问世以来,一直倍受欢迎。书中出场人物多达几百名,人际关系十分复杂,称谓繁多。从某种程度上讲,小说中的称谓语是反映复杂人际关系、承载民族文化的重要语言符号。因此在翻译时,有效传译原作中亲属称谓的文化内涵应该引起译者以及翻译研究者足够的重视。
在《红楼梦》的全译本中,以杨宪益和戴乃迭夫妇翻译的A Dream of Red Mansions和英国汉学家大卫·霍克斯和约翰·福闵德翻译的The Story of the Stone最为著名。虽然两位译者的翻译方法和风格各不相同,但都取得了巨大的成功。本文通过两译本中称谓语的翻译,比较两个来自不同文化背景译者的翻译风格,具体探讨语言与文化的关系,对于通过语言更好地理解文化有重要的指导意义,对于中国文化在世界的传播也有重大意义。
本文共四章。第一章是引论,描述了本论文写作的目的,意义以及文章大纲;第二章是理论综述,主要介绍了一些相关的翻译理论以及重要术语的定义;第三章是文章主体,主要讨论了对于红楼梦中一些称谓语,对比分析两位译者不同的翻译;第四章是结论。
